Shopify Now Supports Merchants Selling CBD Products in Select States Within the U.S.

Starting on September 17th, 2019, Shopify will now support merchants selling hemp or hemp-derived CBD products operating in select U.S. states where permitted by state and local laws.

In LA alone, it feels like CBD infused products are everywhere - from beauty to health to wellness to pet care and beyond. In 2019, the global CBD hemp oil market reached a value of $760 million and is expected to reach $20 billion in sales by 2024.

“Over the last few years, we’ve seen first hand the meteoric rise of new CBD brands entering the market as well as the inclusion of CBD as a key ingredient across verticals. We’re excited that Shopify now supports these brands looking to sell online,” says Matthew Zehner, CEO and Founder of Zehner.

CBD brands can now leverage Shopify’s powerful eCommerce advantages from access to CBD friendly payment partners to CBD-relevant tools to Shopify’s renowned support. The world class eCommerce capabilities that Shopify is known for are now available to CBD merchants in select states within the U.S. including, shipping profiles, third party apps, and built in SEO.

As a top Shopify Plus Partner, we’re thrilled about this development and ready to work closely with our clients following this announcement.

“Shopify Plus and Zehner have forged a strategic partnership based on shared values and a shared vision of what the modern D2C commerce segment should offer. Our approach to the CBD space will be no different, as our goal will remain the same - empowering the merchant to create an elevated, frictionless shopping experience that aligns with consumer expectations,” says Sukh Sidhu, VP of Business Development and Alliances.

Although the sale of CBD products is not legal in all 50 states, Shopify does support merchants in the 12 states where it is legal. Both Zehner and Shopify recommend merchants to review state and local laws as well as monitor updates from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and consult with an attorney.

Today is a great day for every CBD brand looking to start selling online or those who have an existing Shopify store looking to expand into CBD.
