Zehner Cleans Up at the Communcation Awards
Awards could never replace that email, phone call or in-person when a client gushes over how our work changed the face of their business (sometimes with a tear in their eye – happened recently, no lie), but it’s always a nice reminder that what we are doing is making a difference.
When the announcement came in that Zehner won a slew of awards at this year’s Communicators, our Creative Director Mick McCarthy sent out the following email that I thought summed up the experience quite well.
The email goes as follows:
Hmm where to start... I am not one for awards - especially for awards shows. I don't watch The Oscars, Emmys, Grammys, AMA's (wow they suck), Teen Choice, MTV etc. I don't know how a group of industry people, or even public sentiment could quantify what is good or culturally relevant art??? Nor would I trust either to do so.
....And the greatest artist of the 20th century is... PABLO PICASSO.
Sure its true, Picasso is the greatest artist of the 20th century, it's indisputable. Please no emails
debating the fact they will go straight to the the trash!!!
I have never entered work into awards shows in the past as I don't or....didn't believe in them. I always think of the letter written by Nick Cave to MTV regarding his award nomination. For those of you not familiar with his letter, please read it here.
So, I am going to get to the point. Matthew Zehner walked in and handed me a piece of mail sent by the Communicator Awards today with a list of awards Zehner has been honored with:
- Outerknown for Mobile Sites: Shopping - Award of Excellence ( Gold )
- Eco Outdoor for Construction : Shopping - Award of Excellence ( Gold )
- Outerknown for Websites : Fashion - Award of Excellence ( Gold )
- Inside Weddings for Mobile Sites : Award of Distinction ( Silver )
- BFA for Mobile Sites Photo/Video: Award of Distinction ( Silver )
I am still not a fan of awards and don't understand how a gold trophy can symbolize or embody
what is good or bad, or how an artifact can express, team effort, dedication, talent, hard work, skill, late nights, internal fights, angry clients, happy clients, missed lunches, weekends and family dinners, slammed keyboards, endless lines of code, layers, calls, emails, slacks, skypes, hangouts, keynotes, deploys, logins ad infinitum....
What I am getting at is - no amount of trophies can replace the blood, sweat and tears that go into doing what we do, but a little gold-plated pat on the back now and again never hurts.
